Columbia Bank ranks poorly in comparison to the average U.S. bank. Columbia Bank's CDs feature a rate of 5.15% and 3.00% for the one-year and five-year term lengths, respectively, while its highest-yielding money market account has an APY of 1.00%. Given its poor savings rate, you should consider choosing another bank to earn more on your deposits.
Columbia Bank charges customers extremely low fees compared to the average U.S. bank. With no monthly fee, Columbia Bank's checking account is perfect for those who want an easy checking account. For those who will need cash in a pinch, Columbia Bank is perfect because it has no out-of-network ATM fees. Columbia Bank does not reimburse out-of-network ATM fees, which means you'll have to find a Columbia Bank ATM or eat the withdrawal fee.
The debit/check card is very inconvenient. We have to call frequently to verify transactions so that holds are released from our account. Most recently, I called to clear our account for travel outside the US and even though I gave them our account number, they cleared only my card number for travel and not my husband's which we discovered when we were refused a purchase and had to borrow a friend's cell phone to make the international call to the bank. (The rep gave the excuse that I had mentioned only MY travel and not my husband's which was not the case, showing the bank's complete lack of taking any responsibility). We made 2 purchases since that time and now they've turned off access to our card again including online banking and the customer service center is of course closed so here we are in England for the Olympics and have absolutely no access to our money. We'll be changing banks when we return home.
I recently filled out an application online for a mortgage prequalification. I submitted all my documents electronically. The loan officer, Nuno Poitevin NMLS ID# 223216 was the agent assigned to my application. Two days past and I had yet to hear from the bank, however, the real estate agent contacted me to disclose very detailed, personal information about my application, and my credit report. I asked the agent is this how the bank handles customer sensitive information, and she was quick to back track explaining that herself and Nuno. very closely together and that the bank representative had contacted her to inform her that my loan could not be honored. I asked the agent if the bank doesn’t follow their privacy guidelines, as I, the client, had not heard directly from Nuno, yet she had all my information. Shortly after I got off the phone with the real estate agent, I received a casual text message from Nuno just saying hello. I replied the next day, hoping that he’d pick up the phone and handle the interaction professionally, but to no avail. While it’s unfortunate that I was not able to meet the requirements at this time, Nuno was not professional to reach out and discuss the information directly with me. In my opinion this bank does not follow their privacy policies and one’s personal information can be shared with whom ever they choose. I would not recommend them as a secure financial institution.
I've been dealing with Columbia since 2013. At that time, they gave good rates on their mortgages and their high yield checking accounts. I don't know what is happening now, but while other banks are increasing their rates on saving and checking accounts, Columbia has stayed at ridiculously low rates. Customer Service is also at an all time low. I received an Escrow Statement in Sept. 2022 telling me I would be getting a refund. After 4 weeks, I called to let them know I had not received it. I was told they would send it out on Nov. 1st. On Nov 7th, I called again. I was told I was "probably" on the 2nd batch of refunds being sent out. When I complained about the delay, they put me on hold for a while, only to get a nasty supervisor telling me I was not due a refund because I should have seen the statement was in error!! I never received a letter stating that nor was I sent a letter of apology for their error. Don't know if they've changed management but this bank is going downhill fast. I'll be taking my business someplace else.
I am a busy person who frequently travels and changes addresses due to work. I set up a free checking account with them years ago and my card doesn't expire until 2024. Despite this they turned my card off anyway with little to no warning!! No texts, no calls. When i called them to turn my card back on they said they had mailed a letter to my old address. After setting up a new card in the mail, a week later my phone bill doesn't go through because they charged my card WITHOUT WARNING a 20$ I was never told I would have! When I called back they removed the fee then explained to me that they set me up with an account that required a 1000$ minimum WITHOUT MY PERMISSION!!!! They didn't even tell me that's what they were doing! So now im left here SUDDENLY WITHOUT A BANK!!! I HATE THIS BANK!! This was the last straw! Im closing my account and NEVER coming back.
I think some of the reviews are posted by people who are inexperience. I travel around the world, have a 2nd home in Australia etc. Columbia's debit card worked everywhere I went, no hassles. The customer service is great. I used to bank with B of A and quit after they gambled with my money and my tax payer dollars had to bail them out. Columbia keeps their mortgages, are not profit greedy and are local. They try to know their customers. Unlike some small banks they are able to do foreign wire transfers, which my credit union couldn't do. They are very security conscious.
Not only do large checks take ridiculously long to clear, but I was told yesterday in the Fair Lawn branch that you had to call ahead to cash a check over $3,000 because they "have to order the money and it takes at least a week." Thankfully this is not my bank but my father's. Head over to chase where you can cash a $15,000 check without them needing to "order the money." I have been dealing with them for 2 years after becoming POA over my father and there is a problem every single time I go there. If I could give them zero stars and still post I would.
I have been banking at columbia for over 20 years because my parents made the account when i was a kid. Now that i am older, i realize how bad of a decision that was. 1) Their technology (website, atms etc) would have competed with other banks maybe 10 years ago. 2) Their interest rates are below that of online banks 3) They have some of the worst customer service I have ever recieved Here is a recent example: I tried closing my bank account and they told me I had to physically go to the bank to do so. Not living in the area, I withdrew my funds online leaving the account open with zero balance. I recieve a letter stating that they denied the transfer (for no apparent reason) and have charged me $35 for the attempt. I spoke with customer serive, then a branch worker who told me he would take down my info and have a branch manager call me back. Still, I have not recieved a call. Not once did anyone apologize or recognize that I am a valued customer who has had an open account for over two decades. No convenience, lower interest rates and poor customer service really make their no reason to keep your money here.
They always seem to have trouble keeping tellers in Mapleshade and Voorhees. I hear they get hands on training but they don't stay. Since 1985 keeping tellers at these locations is a problem Whats up with that
I cannot say enough about this bank , besides take you business elsewhere . This is the worst bank that I have ever dealt with . Even at the Corporate level customer service is lacking . I pulled my accounts with the exception of a home equity that I am , unfortunately tied to
I've banked with Columbia Bank NJ for many years. I don't wait long at the lobby or the ATM. I've done a HELOC with them and they keep the note and don't sell it to other banks. They High Yield Checking Plus is a great account that pays over 1% for over $10k and about .50% if you fall under, but, there are no penalties for being low balance. It's a no brainer. You can write unlimited checks and withdrawals. Online banking and mobile app are just as good as all the others. The only negative is that they don't have more locations, but they're adding. I don't feel like I have to open two accounts and keep a dang balance in both (like Chase or Bank of America). It's a no hassle bank and I am AMAZED at how many others are hesitant to bank with them. It beats Valley National, Chase, BoA, Wells Fargo in my opinion and I bank with them all. Wish I could cancel my other banks but I'm a bit "tied" with them.
